If i have polycystic ovaries does that mean I have PCOS/PCOD?

Published 5 April 2021 · Updated 9 June 2026

Do polycystic ovaries always mean PCOS/PCOD?

In women with PCOS, the ovaries develop many follicles that do not release an egg regularly (ovulation). Usually, there should be one follicle that grows and releases the ovum (egg). As the appearance of the ovary may look like women with PCOS. But this is not true; women with no symptoms of PCOS may have polycystic ovaries. Conversely, women with PCOS may have normal ovaries. So having polycystic ovaries does not necessarily mean you have PCOS. It may be normal in some.
If you don’t have the symptoms polycystic ovaries are not of great concern.
